Atlantic Puffin
Maine Audubon - Taking Flight - Winter 2024
Illustration of an Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) standing on a cliffside off of the Coast of Maine.
The Atlantic Puffin is a seabird known for its colorful beak and expressive, adorable face. These birds nest in burrows or rocky crevices along coastal cliffs, where they raise their single chick, called a “puffling.” Puffins spend most of the year at sea, diving to catch small fish such as herring and sand lance. Once nearly extirpated from Maine due to hunting and habitat loss, they have made a remarkable recovery through conservation efforts—particularly on islands like Eastern Egg Rock and Seal Island—making them a symbol of successful seabird restoration in North America.
