Fallen leaves are nature’s alchemists, enriching the soil as they break down, and supporting a healthy ecosystem. They shelter salamanders, insulate eastern box turtles during brumation, and provide camouflage for snakes while they hunt. 

Even in the stillness of winter, the magic continues; insects tucked in leaves become vital nourishment for birds and small mammals when food is scarce. Without leaves, many creatures would not be able to endure. Beneath their simple surface, leaves sustain an intricate web of life that is vital to nature’s balance.
