Blue-Tailed Day Gecko & Roussea simplex
Spring 2023
Illustration of a Blue-tailed Day Gecko (Phelsuma cepediana) enjoying the pollen of the plant Roussea simplex, which is endemic to the mountain forests of Mauritius.
The Blue-tailed Day Gecko is a brightly colored species known for its iridescent green body and vivid blue tail. It plays a vital role as the main pollinator of Roussea simplex, a rare and vulnerable climbing shrub that produces nectar-rich yellow flowers. This unique plant–gecko relationship is one of the few known cases of reptile pollination. Both species face threats from habitat loss and invasive species, making their mutual dependence a striking example of the fragility and interconnection of island ecosystems.
